Lokaldesign is an award-winning architecture, landscape and urban design practice providing a full range of architectural and consultancy services.

Haewon Shin established Lokaldesign in 2006 following extensive experience working for the likes of David Chipperfield and OMA Asia in London, Berlin and Hongkong. Since then, we have acquired an international reputation for exemplary design and innovation, gaining wide-spread public recognition with the Han River Renaissance Project in 2006. Our portfolio includes architecture, landscape and infrastructure projects as well as interiors, furniture design and consultancy work. We take pleasure in blurring the boundaries between these different scales and contend the frequent pigeonholing of current architectural practice.

We approach each project individually and are not interested in short-lived stylistic preconceptions. Instead, we aim to embody our work with a unique sense of place, responding to our clients’ and the end user’s needs. The spaces we create are clear and legible, while rich in their detailing and cultural references. Our approach is anchored in rigorous research spanning cultural context, environmental strategies and new production techniques. Engaging these motifs at all scales of work, we enjoy imbuing public realm projects with domestic intimacy and interiors with a civic quality.

Lokaldesign has extensive experience in meeting challenging briefs on tight budgets and schedules. International in outlook and local in agenda, Lokaldesign teaches in schools of architecture in Seoul and London. The quality of our work has been recognized widely through numerous publications and was selected to represent Korea at the Venice Biennale in 2006 and the Honkong Shenzen Biennale in 2007.
