Jeju Community Centre

2011, Jeju Island
Completed

A village on Jeju Island commissioned us to design their new community centre, to be delivered on a very low budget. In response, we laid out spaces to encourage informal meeting and sharing of time which characterizes a successful community hub.

The L-shaped centre frames a new courtyard. Separating the polycarbonate rainscreen from the main structure created a continuous intermediate space, which transforms into a shady veranda in summer. In winter the space acts as an informal meeting place storing heat. In order to reduce construction costs, we used simple and durable concrete block construction and polycarbonate cladding. The finishes are minimal and can be extended at a later time, while the spaces themselves are generous, varied and inviting.
