National Museum of Korean Contemporary History

2010, Seoul
Competition

Set on the main formal avenue leading to the palace, the site for the new History of Korea Museum is located at the heart of Seoul’s representative cultural quarter.

While history museums are often perceived as monuments, we aimed to imbue it with a sense of everyday life. The façade reflects this duality through its varying articulation along the main street and alleyways leading around it. Internally, the generous walkways and cozy intermediate spaces form places to meet and communicate, not just for the passive consumption of cultural assets.

This mix of intimacy and civic character of the internal layout and facade reflects the concept of the museum to present history as something ongoing and in which we are constantly engaged.
