Hyperbolic Geometry

Lokaldesign was asked to develop furniture for the public spaces of the 2009 Honkong and Shenzen Biennale.

In response, we designed the BYOBench, which combines a planter and a bench in a circular self-supporting structure. It offers eight seats in two different positions shaded by the large leaves of the plants at the centre.

We developed the form through a series of investigations into hyperbolic geometry. While constantly changing in section, hyperbolic surfaces are inherently strong and occur frequently in nature. Using traditional craftsmanship to produce the challenging geometry, the entire bench is made out of rattan, a versatile and natural material ideal for outdoor use.

The furniture was exhibited at the 2009 Hongkong and Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism and Architecture under the title BYOB _ Bring Your Own Biennale: Hyperbolic Rattan Bench
