Hangang Riverbank Access Tunnel Project, part of the Han River Renaissance Project

2006- , Seoul
In Progress

Separated from the City by two major highways and embankments, the Han Riverbank Park is only accessible from the surrounding neighbourhoods through a series of tunnels. The “Han River Renaissance” project run by the City of Seoul commissioned Lokaldesign
to manage the transformation of 25 of these tunnels by four other architectural offices and design five of the projects.

Heavily used by the public, the dark and intimidating spaces had previously never been considered worthy of design input. The aim of the project was to transform these infrastructures from utilitarian left-over spaces into safe, engaging and well-designed amenities. They should connect and mark out the Han Riverbank Park, Seoul’s major recreational open space, while continuing to act as first line of defence against flooding.

Our interest in integrating landscape, infrastructure and engineering to provide coherent and multifunctional spaces is rooted in this work.
