Chi Chi Earthquake Memorial Park

2003, Chi Chi, Taiwan
Competition, First Prize

The brief of the international competition asked for a memorial park to the disastrous 1999 Chi Chi earthquake.

Leaving the groundscape vacant, the invisible Chejongpu fault line is framed by the walls around the park, which shift and break through the topography of the site. At times they form retaining walls, seating, platforms for performances and gentle slopes. We arranged the site into different areas of varying scale and intimacy, sheltered and defined by the shifting ground. A continuous treelike canopy spreads over the site, unifying the spaces below and offering shade for regional and local cultural events.
